SERVICES

  • Physiotherapy

The physios at Podium will work with you from injury through to your return to function. We place importance on injury prevention and keeping you active and performing in your daily lives. We are thorough with our assessments and will develop a comprehensive treatment plan accordingly. Our focus is more than just treating the symptoms but fixing the causes. We take a holistic approach and not afraid to think outside the box when it comes to complex and difficult problems. We have developed good relationships with other health professionals and will refer and consult further if required.

  • Western Acupuncture

Western medical acupuncture is a modality involving the insertion of fine needles to treat pain and dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system. It is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence-based medicine. Acupuncture can be an effective adjunct to your physiotherapy care and your physio at Podium can discuss with you if this is an appropriate treatment option. If needles make you nervous, then you don’t need to worry! We won’t do anything without discussing it with you first. Rest assured that acupuncture can be very gentle with a skilled practitioner. However, if needles are just not your thing, then our physios have many other skills and tools to be able to achieve the same results.

  • Rehabilitation

Whether it be “pre-hab” or “rehab” we have it covered at Podium. We recognise that rehab success is dependent on a well-structured and regularly monitored programme. The programme is specific to the injury and specific to your goals. We will work with you to keep you on track and progressing.

If you are a surgical patient we will work with your orthopaedic surgeon on your programme and provide regular updates and reports to your surgeon.

For the gym goers and athletes, we are happy to work with your trainers and coaches to develop a program that will fit in with your training.

  • Sports Performance Recovery

The recovery period is the time your body takes to repair and restore itself between exercise sessions. There are many variables that affect how well and fast a person recovers (conditioning, nutrition/hydration, sleep, and). Poor recovery can lead to a decreased in performance and increased risk of injury.

The team at Podium can discuss your recovery requirements and can advise on the recovery modalities that will help you.

Onsite we have the following equipment to help with your recovery:

Air Relax machine –A device that is connected to sleeves that you place your legs into. The sleeves have multiple chambers that fill up with air sequentially which in turn has a compression-relaxation effect on your muscles. This promotes improved circulation around your legs leading to better blood flow to your muscles. Many athletes and sports teams utilise this machine and other similar concepts as part of their recovery protocol. At podium you are able to book in to use this yourself

Muscle Simulation machine – A device that uses a gentle electrical stimulation to activate the muscles and nerves

Electrical Muscle Simulation (EMS) – A device that uses electrical stimulation to aid recovery and rehabilitation of muscles and the nervous system. It stimulates the muscles to contract and relax using electrical impulses which has been shown to improve circulation, loosen muscle tone, improve range of motion and reduce pain. After a hard workout where your muscles are sore and fatigued, you can simply apply the EMS machine on the areas of soreness, sit back and relax and let the EMS machine do its thing.

  • Shockwave

Shockwave Therapy is a non invasive treatment therapy used to treat chronic soft tissue structures that have failed or slowed healing response. An acoustive wave is produced which kick starts the healing process to bones / tendons and muscle tissue.

    CONDITIONS TREATED

    • Chronic Plantar fasciitis
    • Chronic Achilles tendons
    • Calcified Rotator cuff tendinopathies
    • Tennis elbow
    • Jumpers knee/ Patella tendinitis
    • Tibial stress fractures/ non healing fractures
    • Heel spurs

    DOES IT WORK?

There is a small but building amount of research showing the benefits of Shockwave Therapy. Shockwave Therapy alone will not reduce your symptoms completely. You will be given a rehabilitation and management plan to help optimise chances of recovery. Based on clinical application and experience, Peter will be able to advise you the success rates depending on the injury site.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE SESSION

The painful area will be located by the Physiotherapist, ultrasound gel is applied. The hand held device is then placed on the area and the pressure waves will be delivered. The delivery of a single treatment generally takes around five minutes, with treatment is described as uncomfortable but tolerable.

After the treatment there may be no immediate pain however some discomfort may be experienced 2-4 hours after the session, and in some rare cases last up to 48 hours.

If this pain should occur it is essential that ice is not applied and anti-inflammatory medication is not taken as this is the body’s natural healing and the purpose of the treatment

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

You will required 3 treatment sessions are required at 7 – 10 day intervals. In some chronic conditions more sessions may be required with a fortnightly or monthly follow up.

Some patients may report immediate improvements in their pain however best results occur at 12 weeks. If the 3 sessions are not completed then we will not expect optimal outcome.

    IS IT SAFE?

There as some side effects that can result after Shockwave Therapy treatment. These include:

    • Local swelling
    • Pain
    • Haematoma

However it has been demonstrated that this Shockwave is a safe treatment with side effects being minor and rare.

Shockwave therapy is not suitable for patients with any of the following:

    • Coagulation disorders
    • Tumour disease
    • Pregnancy
    • Are on anticoagulation medication such as Heparin, warfarin etc
  • Muscle Balance Assessment

The Muscle Balance Assessment(MBA) is a comprehensive review of how you move and use your muscles in relation to your sports or your daily life. The focus is on identifying areas of dysfunction that may be causing you ongoing injuries /pain. It can also be an excellent injury prevention tool to identify areas of risk so that you can work on it and correct it before it becomes a problem.

What will the MBA look at?

    • Injury history / current injury / medical history
    • Posture & movement patterns
    • Strength & coordination of muscles
    • Flexibility & range of motion
    • Specific techniques and movement pattern to your sport, work, or activities / hobbies

Who will benefit from a MBA?

    • Someone with ongoing / recurrent injuries, niggles, and pain
    • Someone looking to decrease their risk of injuries
    • Someone who wants to improve their performance in their particular sports, activities, or hobbies

You will receive a full report of the findings with recommendations and management plans. We can directly liaise with any of your key contacts (parents, coaches, strength and condition coaches, fitness trainers, other health professionals) to share our findings and report.

If you need ongoing assistance and treatments then we will make plans to see you through a successful return to play/sport program.

  • Pain Management

Pain can be very debilitating and when pain it is ongoing and unrelenting it can have far reaching effects on a person physically, mentally, and emotionally. Podium has physios who are trained to treat complex and difficult pain conditions. We will work with you to find suitable management options that best suit you and your pain. We will work closely with other health professionals who may be involved in the management of your pain.

  • Adolescent/Young athletes

This is a special group of athletes that require careful management during a rapid growth phase in their development. This growth phase combined with the demands of sporting activities, extracurricular activities, and school can overwhelm a young athlete leading to injuries, over-training, poor performance, and decrease enjoyment.

With our involvement in elite sports we have come across many young athletes who are picking up far too many injuries from over training. We have a special interest in this group of athletes and have experience working with the young athlete, their parents, and their coaches to help navigate through this important development phase.

  • Podiatry

At podium we have an onsite podiatrist who we work with closely to provide a comprehensive management program of your injuries that require orthotics or footcare.
